Getting There & Travel Essentials
- By Air/Land: You can fly directly into Muscat International Airport. Alternatively, if you are visiting from Dubai, you can take a bus (like the Al Khanjry Transport service) from Deira to Muscat, crossing the land border easily.
- Visa: E-Visas are available for a 10-day single entry, costing around ₹500 to ₹3000 (INR). Ensure your return flights and hotel bookings are ready for a smooth immigration process.
- Currency: The local currency is the Omani Rial (OMR). 1 Rial is divided into 1,000 Baisas. A Forex card works seamlessly for most transactions, though keeping some cash is necessary for local markets.
- Best Time to Visit: October to March offers the most pleasant weather, while the summer months (June to September) are extremely hot.
Day 1 & 2: Explore Muscat & Historic Nizwa
Start your trip in the capital city, Muscat, by catching a sunset at the beautiful Azaiba Beach. On your second day, take a trip out to the historic city of Nizwa, located about 165 km from Muscat.
- Nizwa Fort: Built in the 1650s, this massive and majestic castle offers sweeping panoramic views of the city from its towering viewpoint. (Entry fee: ~5 OMR).
- Nizwa Old Souq: Located right outside the fort, this traditional market is famous for its intricate pottery and clay artworks. If you visit on a Friday, do not miss the traditional Goat Market!
Day 3: Snorkeling at Dimaniyat Islands
This is an absolute must-do activity. Take a thrilling speed boat ride from the boat club (about 20 km from Muscat) to the protected Dimaniyat Islands. The water here is crystal clear, making it a paradise for snorkeling. Even if you do not know how to swim, you can safely explore the vibrant underwater world, colorful fish, and sea turtles while wearing a life jacket.
Day 4: Adventure in Wadi Shab & Bimmah Sinkhole
If you visit Oman and skip Wadi Shab, you have missed out on its true natural beauty. Drive towards the coast where you will find this incredible gorge.
- Wadi Shab: After a short 2-minute boat ride across the river, you will trek for about 45 minutes through dramatic mountains and date palms to reach stunning natural pools. You can swim through the wadi to reach a hidden waterfall inside a cave.
- Bimmah Sinkhole (Hawiyat Najm): Just a 30-minute drive from Wadi Shab, this massive natural depression is filled with striking turquoise water. It is a fantastic spot for swimming and photography.
Day 5: The Grand Mosque & Mutrah Corniche
Spend your final day discovering the architectural marvels of Muscat.
- Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque: An awe-inspiring structure made from imported Indian sandstone. It houses a massive 21-ton, single-piece Persian carpet that took 600 weavers four years to create. (Note: Non-Muslims can visit between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM, except Fridays).
- Mutrah Fort & Souq: Climb the Mutrah Fort for incredible views over the Gulf of Oman, then head down to the bustling Mutrah Souq to shop for dates, frankincense, and souvenirs.
- Qurum Beach: Conclude your trip by relaxing and watching a breathtaking sunset at Qurum Beach, Muscat's most popular stretch of sand.
