Safari Zones & Booking Guide
Jim Corbett is divided into multiple zones. Knowing which zone to pick is crucial for the best tiger sightings.
| Zone Name | Safari Type | Details & Booking Tips |
|---|---|---|
| Dhikala Zone | Canter Safari (Jeep requires night stay) | The most famous zone for tiger sightings. If you want a jeep safari here, you MUST book an overnight stay in the government rest house inside the zone. |
| Jhirna & Bijrani Zones | Open Jeep Safari | Highly recommended for Open Air Jeep Safaris. Bookings should be made at least a month in advance via the official site (corbettonline.uk.gov.in). Costs around ₹7,000 per jeep. |
| Dhela, Garjiya, Durga Devi | Open Jeep Safari | Alternative zones around Ramnagar. Offer great landscapes, birding, and chances to spot elephants and leopards. |
| Phato & Sitabani | Open Jeep Safari | Newer zones. Unlike the core zones, these can often be booked on the spot. |
Travel Tips, Rules & Packing
A jungle safari comes with its own set of strict rules and packing requirements.
Best Time to Visit
March to June is the absolute best time for tiger sightings, as the cats frequently come to the rivers to drink water. November to February is excellent for spotting migratory birds. Note that from July to October, most core zones are closed due to monsoons (only Jhirna and Dhela remain open).
Jungle Rules
- Do NOT wear bright-colored clothing; blend in with earthy tones (khaki, olive, brown).
- Do NOT wear strong perfumes or deodorants.
- You are strictly prohibited from getting out of your vehicle inside the park.
- Keep quiet! Loud noises will scare away the wildlife.
- No littering or feeding the animals.
What to Pack
- Binoculars and a good zoom camera
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, and full-sleeve clothing to protect from the sun
- Mosquito repellent (Odomos)
- A dust-proof bag for your electronics (open jeeps get very dusty)
- Jackets and caps if visiting in the winter (the morning safaris are freezing!)
“You are playing the game of the jungle. It's an open forest and animals migrate freely. Whether you spot the tiger or not, listening to the alarm calls of the deer in the deep silence of the forest is an unmatched thrill.”
