The Ultimate Auli Travel Guide | Snowfall, Ropeway & Budget Itinerary

Looking for the ultimate winter wonderland in India? Auli, located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, is famous worldwide for its pristine ski slopes, panoramic Himalayan views, and thrilling ropeway rides. Whether you are an adventure junkie or a nature lover, Auli offers an unforgettable experience.

Because Auli is a high-altitude destination, reaching it requires a bit of planning. Your base camp will be the town of Joshimath. From there, you take a scenic ropeway or a steep drive up to the snow-covered meadows of Auli. Drawing from the detailed travel vlog by 'Adventure On The Way', this guide covers routes, budgets, skiing costs, and common tourist scams to avoid.

How to Reach Auli (via Joshimath)

Your journey to Auli essentially happens in two phases: reaching Joshimath, and then ascending to Auli.

  • Phase 1: Reach Haridwar/Rishikesh. Haridwar is the best and most economical entry point with excellent train and bus connectivity from major cities like Delhi.
  • Phase 2: Haridwar to Joshimath. The distance is about 280 km. State buses leave Haridwar between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM, taking 10-11 hours. Taxis take about 7-8 hours. The scenic route passes through historical towns like Srinagar, Karnaprayag, and Chamoli.
  • Phase 3: Joshimath to Auli. The distance is 10 km. You can take a taxi (around ₹100 per person), drive your own car (allowed only up to the GMVN guest house), or take the highly recommended Cable Car (Ropeway).

The Joshimath - Auli Ropeway (Gondola Ride)

The ropeway is the most thrilling way to reach Auli, offering spectacular views of the snow-capped Nanda Devi and Trishul peaks.

Beware of Tourist Scams

When taking the cable car after 12:00 PM, some local agents or touts might tell you that you cannot go up unless you have a pre-booked hotel in Auli. They will claim all hotels are full and force you to book a sub-par room through them at highly inflated prices.

How to avoid this: Either reach the ropeway office very early in the morning to do a safe, budget-friendly day trip, or pre-book your Auli hotel online before you arrive. Do not book hotels through touts at the ropeway station!
