Arrival in Katra & Mandatory RFID Registration

Your journey starts at the Katra Railway Station (Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra). The Vande Bharat Express from Delhi is a highly recommended, comfortable way to reach Katra by 2:00 PM.

  • RFID Yatra Card (Mandatory): You CANNOT start the trek without this card. Registration counters are available directly inside the railway station or at the Katra Chowk Bus Stand. Just present your Aadhar Card and mobile number.
  • Sim Cards: Prepaid SIMs from other states do not work in J&K. You can buy a local prepaid SIM right outside or inside the Katra Railway Station.
  • Local Auto Fares: From the station, autos charge around ₹210 to Katra Chowk and ₹310 to Banganga (the starting point of the trek).

Choosing Your Trek Route

From Darshani Dwar (Banganga), the trek to the Bhavan is approximately 14 km. There are two primary routes to choose from:

Route NameThe Old Route
CharacteristicsSteeper inclines, slightly shorter. Passes through major milestones like Charan Paduka and Ardhkuwari. Shared with ponies and palkis.
Best ForTraditional pilgrims and those who want to visit every historical temple along the way.
Route NameThe Tarakote Route (New)
CharacteristicsFlatter, much wider, and completely free of ponies. It merges with the old route later. However, it feels slightly longer.
Best ForFamilies with strollers, elderly pilgrims, and those who want a cleaner, pony-free walk.

Transport Options on the Trek

If walking the entire 14 km is not feasible, there are several official transport options managed by the Shrine Board:

  • Ponies (Khacchar): Available from Banganga to Ardhkuwari (~₹650) and up to the Bhavan (~₹1,250).
  • Palanquin (Palki): Ideal for the elderly. Costs start at ₹3,150 (weight limits apply).
  • Baby Strollers: You can rent a baby stroller right at the start of the trek for ~₹200/day.
  • Battery Cars: Available strictly from Ardhkuwari to the Bhavan. Tickets cost ₹450 per person. It is highly recommended to book these online in advance via the Shrine Board website, as on-the-spot tickets are very difficult to get.

Darshan at the Bhavan & Bhairon Temple

Once you reach the Bhavan, the atmosphere is incredibly divine. Here is the process to complete your Darshan smoothly:

  1. Bathing & Prasad: Freshen up at the free bathing ghats. Purchase your Prasad from the official Shrine Board 'Bhent Shop' (₹50 or ₹100 bags).
  2. Smart Lockers: You cannot take leather items, phones, or bags inside the cave. Use your RFID card to book a digital Smart Locker for ₹50 at the Bhavan.
  3. Mata Rani Darshan: Join the queue for the holy cave. Chanting 'Jai Mata Di' keeps the energy high!
  4. Ropeway to Bhairon Temple: The Yatra is considered incomplete without visiting Bhairon Baba. Instead of doing the very steep 2 km trek, take the Passenger Ropeway from the Bhavan to Bhairon Temple. (Book tickets online in advance to avoid massive lines).

The joy of walking the 14 km track, chanting with thousands of devotees, is an unmatched spiritual experience. Let TravelTalk24 help you map out your pilgrimage seamlessly.
