The Complete Sikkim Travel Guide | 5-7 Days Budget Itinerary

Imagine waking up to the view of the world's third-highest mountain, crystal-clear lakes that reflect the sky, and the calming scent of Buddhist incense in the crisp Himalayan air. This isn't a painting; this is Sikkim, a small but majestic state nestled in the Himalayas, bordered by Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet.

Not only is Sikkim one of the cleanest and most peaceful states in India, but it is also the country's first fully organic state—meaning chemical fertilizers and pesticides are completely banned. Based on Shashank Voyage's extensive travel guide, we've compiled everything you need to know to plan a 5 to 7-day budget itinerary through Gangtok, Lachen, Lachung, and beyond.

How to Reach Gangtok, Sikkim

Sikkim requires a bit of travel to reach, as the state is tucked deep into the mountains.

  • By Air: The nearest major airport is Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri, West Bengal. From there, it's about a 120 km drive (4 to 5 hours) to Gangtok by bus or shared cab.
  • By Train: The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), which is also around 120-130 km from Gangtok. You will need to travel by road from the station.
  • Transportation Tips: Public transport within Sikkim is limited. The most common and convenient way to get around is by booking shared cabs or private taxis. Two-wheelers can also be rented in Gangtok.

Permits & Essential Logistics

Because Sikkim shares borders with three different countries, many areas are restricted and require special Inner Line Permits (ILP) or Protected Area Permits (PAP).

  • Required Documents: You will need a valid Voter ID or Passport and passport-sized photographs. (Note: Aadhaar cards are often not accepted for restricted area permits in Sikkim).
  • How to get them: Permits are usually arranged by your tour operator, hotel, or registered cab driver. Securing passes for places like Nathu La Pass can be tricky, so booking through a reliable agency is highly recommended.

Spiritual & Scenic Highlights in South Sikkim

If you venture into South Sikkim, you'll find incredible spiritual centers nestled amongst the mountains:

  • Buddha Park (Ravangla): Located in a peaceful hill town, this park features a massive 130-foot tall golden Buddha statue. On clear days, you get stunning views of Mt. Kangchenjunga in the background.
  • Namchi (Chardham): Sitting at an altitude of 5,500 feet, Namchi ('Sky High') houses the Siddhesvara Dhaam. Here, you can visit replicas of all four Char Dham temples (Badrinath, Dwarka, Jagannath Puri, Rameswaram) and all 12 Jyotirlingas in one campus, watched over by a majestic 108-foot tall Lord Shiva statue.
Travel Tip: High altitude sickness is a real concern when visiting North Sikkim (especially Gurudongmar Lake). Drink plenty of water, carry necessary medications, and do not rush your acclimatization period in Gangtok.
