First Time in Oman: Why You MUST Visit This Underrated Middle Eastern Gem

If you think the Middle East is all about the futuristic skyscrapers of Dubai, prepare to be completely culture-shocked in the best way possible. Oman is an underrated, pristine gem where traditional architecture thrives, the landscapes look like they belong on Mars, and the local hospitality is unmatched. If you are flying into Muscat for the first time, renting a car is a must to explore this gorgeous country at your own pace.

Stop 1: Muscat & Mutrah Corniche

Landing in Muscat, the capital city, the first thing you'll notice is the immaculate cleanliness and the total absence of skyscrapers. The city sticks to its traditional roots, making it feel like a beautiful step back in time.

  • Mutrah Corniche: A beautiful, long stretch of shops, restaurants, and traditional architecture hugging the coastline.
  • Mutrah Souq: Dive into this maze-like traditional market. It's the perfect place to grab local spices, stunning rugs, shawls, and some hot samosas for a quick snack.
  • Mutrah Fort: Built on a rocky hill in the 1580s, climbing to the top of this fort offers a spectacular sunset view overlooking the sea and the white-washed buildings of the city.
  • Local Eats: Grab a quick Chicken Shawarma for just 1 Omani Rial (approx. $2 USD) and wash it down with local sodas like Kinza. For a hearty dinner, find a highly-rated local restaurant and order 'Shuwa'—slow-cooked meat that falls off the bone.

Stop 2: The Ancient City of Nizwa

A highly scenic, 2-hour drive from Muscat brings you to Nizwa, one of Oman's oldest and most culturally rich cities.

  • Jabreen Castle: Set perfectly amidst lush palm trees, this castle (built around 1675) is a maze of history, beautiful photography spots, and even a few resident bats!
  • Nizwa Fort: This is the main attraction of the city. It is huge, beautifully preserved, and you might even spot camels roaming the grounds. Do not miss the chance to try some local street food, like Omani crepes, right outside the fort.
  • Grocery Store Finds: For a fun cultural experience, check out the local supermarkets. You'll find unique items ranging from fresh camel meat to viral treats like Kunafa Pistachio chocolate bars.

Stop 3: Jebel Akhdar (The Green Mountain)

Ready to cool off? Drive up to Jebel Akhdar, Oman's Green Mountain, rising over 2,000 meters above sea level. This area is famous for its stunning agricultural terraces, cool climate, and rose gardens.

Crucial Driving Tip: You MUST rent a 4x4 vehicle to access Jebel Akhdar. There is a strict police checkpoint at the base of the mountain, and they will turn you around if your car does not have 4WD due to the incredibly steep and winding roads.

Once you make it up the mountain, the vibe completely changes from desert to rugged, mountainous terrain. It's much quieter here. For a truly unforgettable experience, take an off-road drive followed by a short hike down into Al Sujara Village to visit Anad Cafe. Built directly into the side of a cliff, it is arguably one of the most adventurous and breathtaking places to enjoy a hot Spanish Latte.

Must-Try Omani Foods

  • Shuwa: Tender, slow-roasted meat (often beef or lamb) deeply flavored with spices.
  • Chicken Biryani & Tikka: Flavorful, perfectly spiced rice and grilled chicken dishes readily available at local spots like Lali Al Jabal Restaurant.
  • Fresh Camel Meat: If you are adventurous, try grilled camel meat! It has a chewy texture similar to beef without an overly gamey taste.
