There are trips, and then there are unforgettable memories. New York City at Christmas time definitely falls into the latter. If you have ever wanted to live out the perfect holiday movie montage—visiting Christmas markets, marveling at window displays, and soaking up the magic of the holiday season—there is no greater city on earth to do it in.
Based on the festive travel vlog by 'Through My Lens', we have mapped out the ultimate 3-day NYC Christmas itinerary. This guide is heavily walking and subway-based, designed to help you see the most iconic trees, the best winter villages, and the most spectacular light displays the city has to offer.
3 Days in NYC for Christmas: The ULTIMATE Holiday Itinerary
Day 1: Midtown Magic & Winter Villages
- Morning Bagels: Start your morning at Ess-a-Bagel (opened in 1976) for a classic, chewy New York bagel loaded with egg, sausage, or salmon.
- Fifth Avenue & St. Patrick's: Walk down 5th Avenue—the Christmas headquarters of NYC. See the Cartier building wrapped in a bow and step inside St. Patrick's Cathedral to view their beautiful nativity scene.
- Radio City Christmas Spectacular: Drop your bags using LuggageHero and head to Radio City Music Hall to see the Rockettes in their legendary Christmas Spectacular. (Get there early to clear security!)
- Bryant Park Winter Village: Head to this massive European-style Christmas market. Grab a hot Raclette cheese sandwich, a decadent hot chocolate, and watch the ice skaters in the shadow of the Empire State Building.
- Evening Trees & Cocktails: Check out the Union Square Holiday Market, then head down to Wall Street to see their massive historic tree. End the night with craft cocktails at Sip & Guzzle or grab a slice at L'Industrie Pizzeria.
Day 2: Central Park & The Rockefeller Tree
- Columbus Circle & Central Park: After breakfast at Carnegie Diner, browse the Columbus Circle Holiday Market. Then, enter Central Park to see the Wollman Rink, the Delacorte Musical Clock, and the iconic Bow Bridge.
- The Met Christmas Tree: Grab a hot dog from the stand outside, then head inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In the Medieval Sculpture Hall, you will find a stunning 20-foot Blue Spruce decorated with 18th-century Neapolitan angels and a nativity scene.
- Saks Fifth Avenue Light Show: As the sun goes down, head back to 5th Avenue to watch the spectacular light show on the side of the Saks Fifth Avenue building (it plays every 10 minutes!).
- Rockefeller Center Tree: End your night battling the crowds to see the most famous Christmas tree in the world glowing over the ice skating rink.
Day 3: Window Displays & Dyker Heights Lights
- Macy's Window Displays: Grab a Yemeni coffee at Mocha & Co, then head to Macy's Herald Square. Marvel at their incredible, interactive holiday window displays that take months to create, and explore the holiday market inside the store.
- Grand Central & The Vessel: Head to Grand Central Terminal to see the New York Transit Museum's annual Holiday Train Show. Afterward, walk over to Hudson Yards to see the spectacular light displays inside the mall and around The Vessel.
- The High Line to Chelsea Market: Walk the elevated High Line park down to Chelsea Market. Grab some of the best tacos in the city at Los Tacos No. 1.
- Dyker Heights Christmas Lights: Take the X28 or X22 Express bus down to South Brooklyn (aim to arrive right around sunset at 4:30 PM to beat the crowds). Spend two hours wandering the streets (especially 83rd-86th Streets) to see the most insane, over-the-top residential Christmas light displays in the country!
