First Day in Oman: Exploring Muscat, Mutrah Souq & Local Culture

Oman is a stunning, off-beat destination in the Middle East that offers a beautiful blend of rich heritage, welcoming locals, and landscapes that rival some of the most dramatic terrains in the world. Often ranked as one of the safest countries globally, it is an incredible destination for solo female travelers. If you are starting your journey in the capital city of Muscat, here is a guide on how to spend your perfect first day.

Arrival & Logistics in Muscat

Arriving at Muscat International Airport is a breeze. To get connected, purchase a physical SIM card right at the airport (Omantel is highly recommended, costing around 5 Omani Rials for an 8GB data plan).

  • Airport Transport: The A1 bus right outside the airport costs only half a Rial and will drop you close to the city center, where you can easily hail a taxi to your hotel.
  • Ride-Hailing: Download 'Otaxi' (the Omani equivalent of Uber/Grab) for reliable and safe transportation around the city.
  • Currency: The Omani Rial (OMR) is the third strongest currency in the world. Exchange a small amount of money (like USD) at the airport, but you will find better rates at exchange houses like LuLu Exchange in the city.

Morning: Mutrah Corniche & Fish Market

Start your morning by exploring the Mutrah area. The Mutrah Corniche offers a gorgeous 14-km stretch perfect for walking along the water with views of the port and mountains. Head straight to the Mutrah Fish Market to experience the raw, local essence of the city. You will find vendors selling everything from fresh daily catches to dates, fruits, and vegetables.

Mid-Day: Shopping at the Historic Mutrah Souq

No trip to Oman is complete without getting lost in a traditional market. Mutrah Souq is a labyrinth of narrow alleys filled with the intoxicating scent of Frankincense (a famous Omani resin you can burn for a beautiful fragrance).

  • Silver & Gold: Oman is famous for its intricate silver jewelry. Items are sold by weight, making it a great place to pick up unique rings, bracelets, and necklaces.
  • Traditional Attire: Try on a 'Mussar' (a traditional Omani turban for men) or shop for beautiful pashminas and scarves.
  • Attar (Perfumes): Stop by a perfume stall to buy traditional non-alcoholic oil perfumes that last for 8-9 hours.

Sunset: Mutrah Fort

As the sun begins to lower and the intense heat subsides, make your way up to Mutrah Fort. Entrance is roughly 3 Rials. You will need to climb around 150 steps to reach the top, but the effort is rewarded with a spectacular, 360-degree bird’s-eye view of Muscat, the ocean, and the surrounding mountains. It is the ultimate spot for sunset photography.

Evening: Local Dining

After descending from the fort, end your day at a bustling local restaurant. Dive into Middle Eastern classics by ordering fresh hummus, tahini, and falafel rolls. It's the perfect way to refuel before heading out on excursions to Wadi Shab or Nizwa the following days.

Travel Tip: The best time to visit Oman is between October and March when the weather is much cooler. If you are exploring during the day, stay hydrated and take breaks in shaded cafes, as the mid-day sun can be quite intense.
