Muscat’s Most Beautiful Spots: Grand Mosque, Opera House & Sunset Cruise

Muscat is a city that flawlessly blends tradition with stunning, grand architecture. From serene mosques and world-class opera houses to historic sunset cruises on the Arabian Sea, the capital of Oman is a cultural masterpiece. Here is a guide to some of the most beautiful spots in Muscat and how to make the most of your visit.

The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

Start your morning at the largest and most magnificent mosque in Oman. Built to open the country up to the outside world, this architectural marvel can accommodate up to 20,000 worshippers at once.

  • Visitor Timings: Tourists are allowed entry strictly between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM.
  • Dress Code: The rules are very strict. Women must wear long, loose-fitting clothes covering the arms and legs, and the hair must be completely covered with a scarf. If you don't have suitable clothing, you can rent an 'Abaya' at the entrance for 2.5 Omani Rials (approx. ₹600 INR). Men must also wear long trousers.
  • Must-See Feature: Inside the main prayer hall, you will find the world's second-largest hand-woven Persian carpet—a spectacular sight that took hundreds of weavers years to complete.

Traditional Omani Dining at Rozna

For an authentic lunch experience, visit Rozna Restaurant. Designed to look and feel like a 300-year-old traditional Omani village/fortress, entering this restaurant is like stepping back in time.

Must-try items include the traditional Omani bread ('Rakhal'), baked fresh on an iron plate with cheese, and their beautifully spiced Biryani (both meat and vegetarian options are available) served with various local hot sauces (Daqqus). Wash it down with a Kinza Cola!

The Royal Opera House Muscat

Commissioned by the late Sultan Qaboos, who was a passionate patron of music and arts, the Royal Opera House is the first of its kind in the Gulf region. The architecture is breathtakingly beautiful.

  • Entry & Tours: The venue is open for tourist visits from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Tickets cost around 3.3 Rials.
  • Rules: While you can use your smartphone to take photos and videos inside, professional cameras and microphones are strictly prohibited and must be left at the entrance.
  • Dress Code for Shows: If you plan to attend an actual performance in the evening, note that sportswear and jeans are not allowed. Formal dress is required.

Relaxation & Sunset: Qurum Beach & Dhow Cruise

After a day of sightseeing, you have two incredible options for watching the sunset over the Arabian Sea:

  • Option 1: Rooftop Lounging. Head to the W Muscat hotel in the upscale Qurum area. Even if you are not a guest, you can visit their rooftop lounge between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Order a coffee or a drink, and enjoy a luxurious sunset view over the pool and the ocean.
  • Option 2: Traditional Dhow Cruise. For a more adventurous evening, book a sunset cruise on a traditional Omani wooden boat known as a 'Dhow'. Departing from the marina, this 2-hour cruise takes you along the coast, offering stunning views of Al Alam Palace and the rugged cliffs from the water. Coffee and snacks are usually included.
Travel Tip: Getting around Muscat is very easy using the 'Otaxi' app, which works just like Uber. However, you will need a local phone number to register, so purchasing a local SIM card (like Omantel) at the airport is highly recommended.
