Day 1: Arrival, Walking Tours & Sunset Dining
Lisbon is an incredibly walkable city. After dropping off your bags, kick off your trip with a self-guided walking tour through some of the city's coolest neighborhoods:
- Time Out Market: If you're starving right off the plane, head here. It features over 30 different food stalls, so you don't have to overthink your first meal.
- Manteigaria (Chiado): Time for dessert! This is one of the most highly-rated spots to try a 'Pastel de Nata', the iconic Portuguese custard tart. Enjoy it fresh, crispy, and dusted with cinnamon.
- Baixa District: Walk through Lisbon's grand downtown district, which was rebuilt with wide, symmetrical streets after the massive 1755 earthquake.
- Bertrand Bookstore: Stop by the oldest operating bookstore in the world (opened in 1732). It makes for a perfect, unique souvenir stop.
For dinner, you MUST make an advance reservation at Ponto Final. Take a quick 10-minute ferry ride across the river from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas, turn right, and walk 10 minutes along the waterfront. You'll find an iconic yellow building right on the pier offering unmatched sunset views over Lisbon.
Day 2: Cafes, Trams & Empanadas
Start your morning with a refreshing homemade lemonade or artisan coffee at Hello, Kristoff, a cool, Nordic-inspired minimalist cafe in the Chiado neighborhood.
Spend the afternoon riding the historic trams, exploring the winding, colorful streets of Alfama, and taking in the panoramic views from the Santa Justa Lift. For an afternoon snack, hunt down El Nido or a specialized empanada shop. Order fresh, made-to-order empanadas (highly recommend the spicy beef or truffle & cheese).
Day 3: Slower Pace & Hidden Gems
Lisbon receives some of the highest amounts of sunny days in all of Europe, so take advantage of it by having a slow, breezy morning.
- Breakfast at Seagull Method: Do not skip this! Request a window seat for great people-watching. It is a hidden gem that serves arguably the best cup of coffee and breakfast in the city.
- Afternoon Stroll: Since it's your last day, put the map away. Wander the streets, perhaps hit a local gym if you crave movement, and simply soak up the local atmosphere.
- Dinner at Palm Eatery: End your trip with an incredible meal. The interior features cool green accents, and the menu is unique—do not miss the Sriracha butter bread and the spinach pasta!
Essential Lisbon Tips
- Watch Your Step: The famous patterned cobblestone tiles look beautiful, but they can be incredibly slippery, especially walking up and down Lisbon's steep hills!
- Make Dinner Reservations: Popular restaurants (like Ponto Final on the water) book up months in advance. Always secure your spot early and double-check your dates to avoid an embarrassing mix-up.
