How to Reach & Visa Details
There are no direct flights from India to Laos. The most popular and budget-friendly way is to fly into Thailand (Bangkok) or Vietnam using budget airlines like AirAsia or Nok Air, and then cross into Laos. Many backpackers prefer the land border crossing from Nong Khai (Thailand) to Vientiane (Laos).
- Visa: Indian passport holders need a visa. You can either apply for an e-Visa online beforehand or get a Visa on Arrival at the border.
- Fees: The Visa on Arrival costs $40. Ensure your passport has at least 6 months of validity and carry cash (USD or Euros) and passport-sized photos.
- Currency: The local currency is the Laotian Kip (LAK). Exchange just enough money at the border to reach the city center, and exchange the rest in the city for better rates.
Vientiane: The Capital City
Start your journey in Vientiane. Spend about 2 days exploring the city by renting a bicycle or a motorbike (remember to carry your International Driving Permit).
- Patuxai Monument: A stunning victory monument that resembles the Arc de Triomphe or Charminar.
- COPE Visitor Centre: Learn deeply about Laos's history and the lasting impact of US bombings.
- Buddha Park: Located near the Mekong River, featuring unique and eccentric Buddha sculptures.
- Night Market: Walk along the Mekong River in the evening to enjoy street food like the famous sticky rice for just ₹100-₹150 per meal.
Vang Vieng: The Adventure Paradise
Take a 5-6 hour bus/minivan or a high-speed train from Vientiane to Vang Vieng. Known as an adventure paradise, this town is a favorite among backpackers. Spend 3 days here.
- Blue Lagoons: Swim in crystal-clear bluish waters or rent life jackets if needed.
- Adventure Activities: Enjoy tubing, kayaking, and zip-lining.
- Trekking: Hike up to scenic viewpoints for breathtaking valley and mountain views, especially beautiful during the evening.
Luang Prabang: The Cultural Capital
Travel to Luang Prabang via train. This historical city and UNESCO Heritage site requires 3-4 days to fully explore.
- Kuang Si Waterfalls: Widely considered one of the best waterfalls in Southeast Asia.
- Mount Phousi: A hilltop viewpoint offering stunning sunset views over the city.
- Alms Giving Ceremony: Wake up early to witness this deeply cultural practice of donating food to Buddhist monks.
- Mekong River Cruise: Experience a peaceful evening boat ride.
Pakse, Don Det & Bolaven Plateau
If you have more time to extend your trip, take a night bus or a train-bus combo down to Southern Laos.
- Don Det (4000 Islands): Take a bus and ferry to reach this incredibly calm island. Rent a bicycle to explore, stay in bamboo huts for ₹300-₹400, and just relax for 2-3 days.
- Bolaven Plateau Loop: Start from Pakse for a famous 4-day motorbike loop. You will ride through stunning waterfalls, coffee plantations, and remote villages, staying in cheap local homestays.

Laos is incredibly cheap if you travel smart. Here is the estimated budget for a 15-20 day trip:
- Accommodation: Hostel dorms or basic guesthouses average ₹350 - ₹500 per night.
- Food: Eating local street food costs around ₹200 - ₹400 per day.
