Sandwiched between Thailand and Vietnam, Laos offers an experience akin to what its neighboring countries might have felt like 30 years ago. It’s uncrowded, affordable, safe, and rich in natural beauty and culture, while now boasting accessible modern infrastructure like high-speed railways. If you are looking for a peaceful but packed adventure through northern Laos, here is the perfect 10-day itinerary covering Vientiane, Vang Vieng, and Luang Prabang.

Days 1-2: Vientiane (The Unassuming Capital)
Vientiane is one of the most laid-back capitals in Asia. It isn't about rushing to check off sightseeing spots; it's about soaking up the local atmosphere. Spend a day or two exploring its low-rise streets, temples, and history.
- Patuxai (Victory Gate): A monument honoring Laos' independence with a distinct Lao architectural flair. Climb to the roof for a rare panoramic view of the city.
- Pha That Luang: A 16th-century gold-covered Buddhist stupa considered the most sacred in Laos.
- COPE Visitor Centre: A must-visit, sobering nonprofit center detailing the history and ongoing impact of the Vietnam War's unexploded ordnance in Laos (the most heavily bombed country per capita in the world).
- Night Food Market: Skip the main riverside market for shopping and instead head to the central food market. Enjoy meat skewers, spring rolls, corn pancakes, and the famous local Beerlao.
Days 3-5: Vang Vieng (The Adventure Town)
Situated about 90 minutes north of Vientiane (easily reached via the new high-speed rail), Vang Vieng is surrounded by stunning limestone mountains. It hits the perfect sweet spot between a tourist-friendly hub and a rustic countryside town.
- Nam Song River & Tubing: Floating down the river on an inflatable tube is a rite of passage. The 'tipsy tubing' scene has been heavily regulated since its wild days in the 2000s, making it a safe, fun, and relaxing 'lazy river' experience.
- Blue Lagoons: Rent a buggy or tuk-tuk to visit Blue Lagoons 1, 2, or 3. They feature natural limestone pools, zip lines, diving boards, and water caves.
- Hot Air Balloons: Vang Vieng is famous for its stunning sunrise and sunset hot air balloon rides over the dramatic karst landscape.
Days 6-10: Luang Prabang (The UNESCO Heritage Gem)
Take the incredibly convenient 50-minute high-speed LCR train north to Luang Prabang. This former royal capital is an impeccably preserved fusion of Lao and French architecture that feels more like a charming village.
- Old Quarter Walks & Temples: Wander past French bakeries and explore some of the 30+ temples, notably the ornate Wat Xieng Thong and Wat Sene.
- Mount Phousi: Climb the 300 steps for panoramic views of the town and rivers. It's popular for sunset, but consider visiting off-peak to avoid crowds.
- Night Market & Food: The pedestrian night market is massive and beautifully organized. Don't miss the adjacent food street where you can try Lao Sausage (Sai Ua) filled with lemongrass and chili over a smoky grill.
- Morning Alms Ceremony: Observe the centuries-old tradition of locals offering food to monks at sunrise. Observe respectfully and in silence from a distance.
- Kuang Si Waterfall: Take a day trip to these spectacular multi-tiered turquoise falls. While there, you can also visit the Free the Bears sanctuary located right by the entrance.
- Mekong River Slow Boat & Pak Ou Caves: Take a scenic boat trip up the Mekong to view thousands of Buddha statues inside the Pak Ou Caves, and stop by the 'Whiskey Village' (Ban Xang Hai) to sample the potent local rice wine (Lao Lao).
