Where to Stay: The Traditional 'Machiya' Experience
Skip the standard western-style hotels and immerse yourself in Japanese culture by booking a 'Machiya'. These are traditional wooden townhouses found throughout Kyoto. Places like the Yeno House beautifully blend historic wooden ceiling beams with modern, luxurious facilities—including private, open-air baths and manicured garden views.
Kyoto Highlights & Night Photography
- Arashiyama Riverboats: Head to the Katsura River in Arashiyama. You can rent a traditional wooden rowboat for just 1,800 Yen an hour. It is a fantastic way to view the autumn leaves from the tranquility of the water.
- Temple Illuminations: During the autumn and early winter seasons, many of Kyoto's shrines host night illuminations. Visit Kodai-ji Temple after dark to see the fiery autumn foliage beautifully lit up against the night sky.
- Hokan-ji Temple (Yasaka Pagoda): If you want that iconic, empty shot of the Yasaka Pagoda, be prepared to wait! Arrive late in the evening and wait patiently (often 30-40 minutes) for the crowds to clear. The resulting photo is absolutely worth it.
Day Trip: Hiroshima & Miyajima Island
Kyoto's excellent Shinkansen (bullet train) connections make a day trip to Hiroshima incredibly easy.
From Hiroshima, take a quick 10-15 minute ferry ride across the water to Miyajima Island. Famous for its friendly, free-roaming deer and the iconic 'floating' Torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine, it is a must-visit. While you're there, be sure to indulge in the local street food, especially the freshly grilled oysters and local burgers!
Must-Eat Ramen Spots
No trip to Japan is complete without an endless supply of noodles:
- Ichiran Ramen: It might be a major chain, but its classic tonkotsu broth and customizable spice levels hit the spot every single time. It is a perfect comfort meal.
- Tsukemen (Dipping Noodles): Branch out from traditional ramen and try Tsukemen. The noodles are served cold alongside a separate, intensely flavored, thick hot broth that you dip the noodles into before eating.
“I can never get enough of this... It just blends in really well. It was a very comfortable stay and I highly recommend booking a machiya house if you plan to stay in Kyoto.”
