How to Spend 3 Days in Istanbul Turkey | Itinerary w/ Sunset Spots, Street Food, & Classics
Day 1: The Historic Peninsula (Sultanahmet)
Start your trip by diving into the heart of the city's history.
- Hagia Sophia (8:30 AM): A global masterpiece built in 537 AD. Originally a church, then a mosque, and now a museum/mosque. The second-floor gallery requires a €25 ticket.
- Basilica Cistern: Just a short walk away, this magical 6th-century underground Roman water reservoir features hundreds of marble columns, including the famous Medusa heads.
- Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Mosque): Known for its 20,000 blue İznik tiles. Entry is free, but be respectful of prayer times (closes for ~15 mins five times a day).
- Sultanahmet Square (Hippodrome): The former Roman chariot racing track. Don't miss the 3,500-year-old Egyptian Obelisk.
- Grand Bazaar: A massive 15th-century maze of thousands of shops. Spend an hour getting lost in the history.
- Süleymaniye Mosque (Sunset): Designed by the famous architect Sinan. The mosque garden offers one of the most magnificent sunset views over the entire city of Istanbul.
Day 2: Ottoman Palaces & Asian Side
- Topkapı Palace: The heart of the Ottoman Empire for nearly 400 years. Dedicate at least 2 hours to explore the grand courtyards and the Harem (closed on Tuesdays).
- Gülhane Park: Located right next to the palace, a beautiful green space perfect for a relaxing stroll.
- Eminönü & Spice Bazaar: Head down to the waterfront. The Spice Bazaar is smaller than the Grand Bazaar but incredibly aromatic. Grab a famous Balık Ekmek (fish sandwich) by the Galata Bridge.
- Bosphorus Cruise / Kadıköy: Take a ferry from Eminönü to the Asian side (Kadıköy) for a more local, relaxed vibe, or hop on a Bosphorus cruise to see the city from the water.
Day 3: Taksim, Galata & Karaköy
- Taksim Square & Istiklal Avenue: Start at Taksim Square and walk down the bustling 1-mile stretch of Istiklal Avenue. Watch out for the historic red tram and enjoy the endless food spots and shops.
- Galata Tower: A 14th-century Genoese tower. The €30 entry fee is steep, but the 360-degree panoramic view of the Bosphorus and the historic peninsula is unmatched.
- Karaköy: Walk down from Galata to this vibrant, colorful neighborhood by the water. It's full of local fish spots, cafes, and a great sunset vibe.
- Hidden Gem Sunset: End your trip at the Haliç Metro Station platform. Suspended over the Golden Horn, it offers an incredible, uncrowded sunset view of the city.
Essential Travel Tips
- Istanbulkart: The city's public transport card is a must. You can use it on trams, ferries, and the metro. It makes navigating between Sultanahmet and Taksim incredibly easy.
- Street Food: Don't miss out on authentic Turkish street food. Try the local Döner (tender beef sandwich), Simit (sesame bread rings), and roasted chestnuts sold on every corner.
- Cats of Istanbul: You will see cats everywhere! They are an integral part of the city's culture and are very well taken care of by the locals.
“Navigating the maze of the Grand Bazaar, coordinating ferry times to the Asian side, and finding hidden sunset spots can be overwhelming. Let TravelTalk24 map out your transcontinental adventure effortlessly.”
