Flights & E-Visa Information

Getting to Egypt from India is relatively straightforward, but the visa process has a specific requirement you need to be aware of:

  • Flights: Direct flights to Cairo operate from Delhi and Mumbai, taking about 7.5 hours and costing around ₹40,000 for a round trip. If you are on a budget, indirect flights (taking 10-15 hours) can drop the price to under ₹30,000 on specific dates.
  • The E-Visa 'Catch': You can easily apply for an e-visa online by uploading your passport and basic details. However, you MUST upload an 'Invitation Letter' (or Letter of Guarantee). If you have one, the visa fee is just $25 and takes about 3 days. If you don't, it is highly recommended to use a visa agency to arrange the letter and process it for you (costing around ₹3,000 to ₹4,000 total).

Airport Transfers & Accommodation

Cairo International Airport is about 36 kilometers away from Giza, which is the prime area to stay if you want to wake up to views of the Pyramids.

  • Transportation: There are no direct public buses from the airport to Giza. The most convenient and safest option is to use ride-hailing apps like Uber or Careem. A taxi ride to the downtown area or Giza will cost between ₹700 and ₹1,000.
  • Where to Stay: Booking a hotel in Giza puts you just 1-2 km away from the Great Pyramids, saving you hours of commuting in Cairo's notorious traffic.

What to Eat: Trying Authentic Koshari

Downtown Cairo is packed with local markets and multi-story restaurants serving traditional Egyptian fare. You absolutely cannot leave Egypt without trying its national dish: Koshari.

Koshari is a hearty, vegetarian comfort food made from a mix of noodles, pasta, chickpeas (kabuli chana), and lentils, topped with a zesty tomato puree, traditional spices, and crispy fried onions. The spices are somewhat similar to Indian flavors, making it very comforting for the Indian palate.

Local Dining Times: Egyptians eat late! Lunch time typically runs from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and dinner goes from 8:00 PM all the way until 2:00 AM.

Do not miss the Egyptian Museum. It is a highly interesting and knowledgeable place where the things you've seen in movies or read in books are right in front of your eyes.
