Croatia has quickly become one of Europe's most beloved destinations, offering an incredible blend of vibrant historical cities, towering mountain gorges, and crystal-clear Adriatic coastlines. With its heavy Italian and Slavic influences, the country boasts a unique architectural and culinary identity that completely captivates travelers.
One of the absolute best ways to explore the country's diverse landscapes is by taking to the road. Croatia has the second-most campsites in all of Europe, making it a van life paradise. Based on the fantastic travel vlog by 'Wyatt and Reyka', here is the ultimate 10-day itinerary to road-tripping and eating your way through Croatia.
10 Days in CROATIA! (Our New Favorite Country!)
Days 1-2: Discovering Zagreb
Begin your journey in the inland capital of Zagreb. It is a city that perfectly blends its 11th-century Austrian-Hungarian roots with modern skyscraper elements and an embrace of vibrant street art.
- Ban Jelačić Square: The bustling central square filled with colorful architecture and lively music.
- St. Mark's Church: Located in the historic Gradec (Upper Town), this 13th-century church is famous for its vibrant, tiled roof displaying two historic coats of arms.
- The Grič Tunnel: Originally built as a World War II bomb shelter, this 350-meter-long tunnel has been repurposed into a cool, historic pedestrian walkway connecting parts of the city.
- Dolac Market (Place Market): If you are in Zagreb on a Friday, this market transforms. Local famous chefs come out to cook signature dishes and unique street-food variations at very cheap prices.
A Taste of Croatia
Because of its location just across the Adriatic Sea from Italy, Croatian cuisine features deep Italian roots combined with hearty Slavic traditions. You cannot leave without trying these staples:
| Dish / Drink | Description | Where to Try It |
|---|---|---|
| Štrukli | A traditional Zagreb dish made of dough filled with cottage cheese, then baked or boiled to a warm, gooey, lasagna-like consistency. | Zagreb (Local bakeries and markets) |
| Pašticada | The 'Queen of Croatian Cuisine'. A rich beef stew marinated in vinegar and garlic, braised for hours, and served with thick, pillowy gnocchi. | Dalmatia / Dubrovnik (e.g., Konoba Nava) |
| Pošip Wine | A crisp, sweet white wine made from local grapes grown on the island of Korčula. | Any coastal Dalmatian restaurant |
| Olive & Almond Liqueur | A strong, sweet, candy-like local liqueur. | Street-side tastings in Istria and Zagreb |
Days 3-10: The Coastal Road Trip to Dubrovnik
Once you pick up your van, the incredibly well-paved Croatian toll roads make driving south an absolute dream. Here are the must-stop highlights on your way down the Dalmatian Coast:
- Zrmanja Gorge: A jaw-dropping canyon where towering cliffs drop straight into gorgeous green-blue river water. A perfect, quiet nature escape away from the cities.
- Pag Island: Cross over to this unique island where the terrain suddenly changes to look like a rocky, rose-colored Martian landscape.
- Dubrovnik Old Town: End your trip in the famous walled city. Paying the €40 fee to walk the top of the ancient city walls is entirely worth it for the unmatched, 360-degree views of the ocean and the terracotta roofs.
- Buža Bar (Dubrovnik): A literal 'hole-in-the-wall' cliffside bar located just outside the old town walls. Grab a drink and watch the sunset, or if you are brave, partake in the popular local cliff jumping right off the rocks!
“It's times like these that I'm like, why the heck am I in cities so often when there is this gorge just waiting for you? Van life is pretty great.”
